Speech/Language Scientist

Air Force Research Lab.

Location: Wright-Patterson AFB, OH

Job Description / Summary of Duties

Title:  Speech/Language Scientist

The ideal candidate will have a background in speech or language science, linguistics, psycholinguistics, speech perception, discourse analysis and/or a related field, and will draw from this knowledge to contribute to, and expand upon, a program of research focused on human communication.  The candidate will help to identify the gaps in our understanding of human communication, focused primarily on spoken and multimodal communication. Of particular interest is communication taking place within the context of the stressors inherent in complex operational environments (e.g., noise, time constraints, high workload, degraded communication signals), including the identification of processes employed for overcoming the barriers of effective communication, and the identification of indices of communication breakdown. The employee will be expected to design and conduct critical behavioral experiments to address these knowledge gaps, informed by an understanding of the relevant literature and an acquired understanding of real-world, operational communication task environments. They will also be expected to collect and analyze data, and report results to the scientific community in general, and to relevant DoD communities, in particular. Importantly, the candidate will use results from these research efforts to inform the design of speech-based displays and communication management systems, and to develop interfaces supporting natural human-machine communication.

Specific Job Qualifications

Required

  • US citizenship required, and must be eligible for Secret Security Clearance

Experience in the following preferred:

  • Spoken language and discourse analysis
  • The development of spoken language technologies for dialogue system development.
  • Experimental design; software development for data collection, analysis, and interface design
  • **Interest in communication taking place within the context of the stressors inherent in complex operational environments (e.g., noise, time constraints, high workload, degraded communication signals), including the identification of processes employed for overcoming the barriers of effective communication, and the identification of indices of communication breakdown

Salary Range

DR-II

Educational Requirement

Recent graduate with a PhD in one of the following:  psychology, cognitive science, linguistics (sociolinguistics, dialectology, psycholinguistics, computational linguistics, historical-comparative linguistics, or applied linguistics), language technology or a related field with an emphasis on human-human and/or human-machine communication.

Skills (both required and desirable)

Desirable:  programming and experience with language and audio processing software (e.g., PRAAT) and/or transcription and annotation software (e.g. ELAN)

SUMMER INTERNSHIP MENTORS

The Acoustical Society ‘s Committee for the Improvement of Racial Diversity and Inclusion (CIRDI) is planning a summer research and internship experience for undergraduate students from historically Black colleges and universities, and minority-serving institutions of higher learning (HBCU-MSIs).  We’re very excited to unveil this new initiative, and we hope you’ll consider how you might get involved.

We plan a 12-week internship program in Summer 2021, including two weeks of a virtual acoustics short course for undergraduate students from various academic backgrounds, followed by a paid internship in various academic and industry environments.  These experiences could be in-person or virtual, as dictated by local constraints. We are seeking mentors for these students, both for the short course and also for the mentored internship experiences.

The mentoring experiences and goals will include the following:

  • Willingness and availability of the mentor to attend ally and mentoring training provided by ASA consultants
  • Assistance with developing content areas for the short course
  • Willingness to integrate undergraduate students from minority institutions into your activities and groups, to provide opportunities for scientific, practical, and career development
  • Willingness to maintain relationships with the students in the program remotely and at conferences over the next 1-2 years

Other desirable mentoring contributions include:

  • Prior experience with diverse students and employees
  • Active group experiences that provide a cohort that can support the students
  • Possibility of the local agency to cover some of the internship expenses

In return, we expect that the mentors and their teams will gain the benefit of new perspectives and will help the Society expand our reach within underrepresented groups.  We are already involved in active recruitment of qualified students, and we hope that quite a few students will take advantage of free registration for Acoustics Virtually Everywhere in December.  In particular we are highlighting the special lecture by Dr. James West.

Perhaps you can see yourself contributing to this initiative by serving as a mentor, or by recommending other mentors. We encourage you to reach out to the Committee chair, Tyrone Porter, or to the vice-chair, Peggy Nelson.  We welcome the involvement of members from all areas of acoustics, including academic and industry partners.  We believe that this initiative could be a strong step in the right direction of making the ASA more diverse and inclusive, and we welcome your involvement.  We appreciate your giving this your consideration, and discussing this with your own acoustics group. Let us hear from you!
